Following the successful Indian debut of the XSR155 late last year, Yamaha Motor India is shifting into high gear for 2026. The Japanese manufacturer is preparing a major expansion of its premium portfolio, headlined by the world-first Yamaha R2 sportbike and a strategic entry into the electric vehicle (EV) segment.
The Yamaha R2: A New “Made-in-India” Performance Benchmark
While the R15 has been the undisputed king of the entry-level supersport segment for years, Yamaha is finally offering riders a “step-up” option. The Yamaha R2 is slated to be manufactured at the company’s Chennai facility, serving both the domestic Indian market and global exports.
- Engine: Expected to feature a new 200cc liquid-cooled engine, likely producing around 24–25 bhp.
- Tech: Anticipated to carry over premium DNA from the R15 V4, including a TFT display, Traction Control, and USD forks, but with a more muscular frame and refined performance for highway touring.
- Launch Timeline: Expected to arrive by the 2026 Festive Season, priced competitively between ₹1.95 lakh and ₹2.10 lakh (ex-showroom)
EV Entry: EC-06 and Aerox-E
Yamaha’s approach to the Indian EV market is two-pronged: a practical commuter and a high-performance lifestyle scooter.
1. Yamaha EC-06 (The Commuter)
Interestingly, Yamaha has partnered with Bengaluru-based startup River to fast-track its EV entry.
- Production: Series production has officially commenced at River’s factory in Hoskote, Karnataka.
- Specs: Based on the River Indie platform, it features a 4kWh battery providing a 160 km range and a top speed of 90 km/h.
- Positioning: While it shares underpinnings with the Indie, the EC-06 features a sharper, “Yamaha-style” body and premium telematics.
2. Yamaha Aerox-E (The Performer)
The electric version of the popular Aerox 155 is geared toward enthusiasts.
- Launch Date: Expected to be officially unveiled/launched by late January or February 2026.
- Price: Anticipated to be a premium offering, with estimates ranging from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹2.9 lakh.
The Nmax 155: The Ultimate Maxi-Scooter Upgrade
For those who love the Aerox but want more practicality, the Nmax 155 is finally being readied for India.
- Features: It uses the same 155cc VVA engine as the R15 but adds a larger fuel tank, a more relaxed riding posture, and the new Yamaha Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (YECVT) seen in global markets.
- Arrival: Likely to debut in March 2026, bridging the gap between performance scooters and touring machines.
