Toyota has officially unveiled its first electric vehicle for the Indian market: the Urban Cruiser Ebella.

Toyota has officially unveiled the Urban Cruiser Ebella, marking the company’s entry into India’s electric passenger vehicle segment. The midsize electric SUV becomes Toyota’s first fully electric offering for the Indian market and represents a major milestone in the brand’s long-term electrification strategy in the country. This mid-size electric SUV represents a significant milestone for Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) as it enters the highly competitive mass-market EV segment in India, where electrification is accelerating rapidly. The Urban Cruiser Ebella is essentially Toyota’s version of the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, born from the longstanding partnership between Toyota and Suzuki. Both models share the same foundational architecture, but Toyota has applied its signature design language and branding tweaks to create a distinct visual identity. This collaborative approach allows Toyota to leverage shared development costs and enter the segment efficiently.

Production and Platform

The Ebella will be manufactured alongside the e Vitara at Maruti Suzuki’s state-of-the-art Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. This shared production strategy is key to keeping costs competitive in India’s price-sensitive EV market.

At its core, the Urban Cruiser Ebella rides on the HEARTECT-e platform—a dedicated electric skateboard architecture developed jointly by Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu. This flat-floor, high-voltage design optimizes interior space, lowers the center of gravity for better handling, and incorporates extensive use of high-tensile steel. It also features a reinforced battery protection structure to enhance occupant safety in the event of impacts or underbody collisions.

Design and Styling

While the overall silhouette mirrors the e Vitara, Toyota has given the Ebella a more premium and futuristic appearance inspired by its “Urban Tech” design philosophy. Key highlights include:

  • A bold hammerhead front fascia with segmented LED DRLs, triangular headlights, and a thick black trim connecting them.
  • Sleek, aerodynamic 18-inch alloy wheels.
  • Connected LED taillamps with reworked detailing and Toyota badging at the rear.
  • Confident ground clearance and classic SUV proportions for an authentic road presence.

The result is a vehicle that feels distinctly Toyota while retaining the practical, modern appeal of its sibling.

Powertrain and Performance

The Urban Cruiser Ebella offers two battery pack options (using durable LFP chemistry):

  • 49 kWh — paired with a front-mounted electric motor producing around 142–172 hp (depending on tuning) and 189 Nm of torque.
  • 61 kWh — delivering up to 172 hp and the same 189 Nm, with a claimed ARAI-certified range of up to 543 km on a single charge.

In India, the model is front-wheel-drive only (unlike some international variants that offer AWD). Performance is expected to be agile and responsive, typical of EVs, with instant torque delivery. A notable feature is its impressive turning radius of 5.2 meters, making it highly maneuverable in tight urban spaces.

Interior and Features

The cabin adopts a contemporary, premium theme with dual-tone black-and-brown (or tan) interiors, soft-touch surfaces, and a two-spoke squircle steering wheel. It includes a modern dashboard layout with:

  • A 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen supporting wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, cloud-based navigation, and Toyota’s i-Connect connected services.
  • A 10.25-inch digital driver display.
  • Panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, JBL sound system, wireless charger, ambient lighting, and a dial-type shift knob.

Safety is a strong suit, with seven airbags, disc brakes on all wheels, a 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS features, and other advanced driver-assistance systems.

Market Positioning and Ownership Benefits

The Urban Cruiser Ebella targets the growing compact/mid-size electric SUV segment, where it will compete against models like the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, Mahindra BE 6, and VinFast VF6—plus its sibling, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara.

To make ownership more accessible, Toyota is offering an 8-year battery warranty, a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental scheme to reduce upfront costs, a 60% assured buyback program, and access to over 500 EV-enabled service touchpoints.

Bookings opened immediately upon unveiling with a token amount of Rs 25,000, and the model is expected to go on sale in the coming weeks or months (likely February 2026 or soon after). Official pricing is yet to be announced, but expectations point to a starting range around Rs 18–20 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it competitively.

With the Urban Cruiser Ebella, Toyota reinforces its multi-pathway strategy toward carbon neutrality—combining hybrids, flex-fuel, and now pure EVs—while delivering reliability, efficiency, and value that Indian buyers trust. This launch signals Toyota’s serious intent to capture a meaningful share of India’s booming electric mobility landscape.
