JSW Group Partners with Chinese Automaker Chery to Introduce Plug-in Hybrid SUV

In a significant move to expand its footprint in India’s burgeoning passenger vehicle market, the JSW Group has partnered with Chinese automaker Chery to launch a rebadged version of the Jetour T2 SUV. This collaboration marks JSW’s bold step toward establishing an independent presence in automobile manufacturing through its dedicated division, JSW Motors Limited.

The vehicle, a plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) SUV based on the Jetour T2 (specifically the T2 i-DM variant), is set to debut in India as JSW’s inaugural passenger car offering. Unlike the group’s existing joint venture with MG Motor—known as JSW MG Motor India—this new model will operate under the standalone JSW branding. It will not carry the Jetour nameplate, reflecting JSW’s ambition to build its own identity as a carmaker rather than relying solely on imported or co-branded products.

The Jetour T2, originally from Chery’s Jetour sub-brand (launched in 2018 and focused on rugged, adventure-oriented SUVs), features a distinctive boxy design reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender. It utilizes monocoque construction for a balance of on-road comfort and off-road capability. Globally, the T2 is available in both pure internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid configurations, with options for front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD).

Aligning with JSW’s emphasis on sustainable mobility, the Indian version will exclusively feature the plug-in hybrid powertrain. This includes a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with electric motors, delivering a combination of efficiency, performance, and reduced emissions. The PHEV setup offers both FWD and AWD variants internationally, though specifics for the Indian market—such as the chosen drivetrain configuration—remain unconfirmed. This focus on hybrids positions the SUV as one of the more accessible PHEV options in India, where such vehicles are typically limited to luxury segments dominated by brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Production will be localized at JSW’s new greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (formerly Aurangabad), Maharashtra. This strategic choice supports India’s “Make in India” initiative, enables cost efficiencies through local assembly, and helps JSW establish itself as a true domestic automaker. The plant is part of broader investments in the region, aimed at scaling production for sustainable vehicles.

The SUV is expected to reach dealerships by the third quarter of 2026, potentially aligning with the festive season for maximum market impact. Industry estimates suggest a premium pricing around ₹45 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as an aspirational yet relatively attainable option in the growing PHEV space. This partnership builds on earlier discussions between JSW and Chery, which have included technology and component supply arrangements for future new-energy vehicles. While JSW MG Motor India continues to thrive—ranking as India’s seventh-largest car brand and second-largest EV maker—the independent JSW Motors initiative allows the group to diversify its portfolio without overlap.

The launch underscores India’s accelerating shift toward electrified mobility, even as pure EVs gain traction. By introducing a capable plug-in hybrid SUV with Chinese technology adapted for local needs, JSW aims to capture demand from buyers seeking premium features, versatility, and lower running costs.

As details on exact specifications, features, and variants emerge closer to launch, this debut could reshape competition in India’s premium SUV segment and signal stronger momentum for hybrid adoption in the country.
