VinFast Surpasses 1,000 EV Sales in India Within Four Months, Ranks as Fourth-Largest Electric Car Brand

Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has achieved a remarkable milestone in its India journey, crossing the 1,000-unit cumulative sales mark for electric vehicles just four months after launching retail operations in the country. Entering the market in September 2025 with its locally assembled VF6 compact SUV and VF7 mid-size SUV, VinFast has quickly established itself as a notable contender in India’s rapidly expanding EV segment.

According to industry reports and Vahan registration data, VinFast recorded approximately 830 units sold from September to December 2025, with December alone delivering a strong 375 units. This performance propelled the brand to the fourth position in monthly EV sales for December, surpassing established players such as Hyundai (around 262 units), Kia (313-314 units), and BMW (343 units). The year kicked off positively in 2026, with over 200 additional units sold in the early days of January, pushing the cumulative figure beyond 1,000.

This places VinFast behind only the top three dominant players in India’s electric passenger vehicle market: Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor, and Mahindra Electric. Tata continues to lead with commanding volumes (e.g., 6,434 units in December), followed by JSW MG Motor (around 3,555 units) and Mahindra Electric (3,065-3,066 units). The overall Indian EV market saw robust growth in 2025, with annual passenger electric vehicle sales exceeding 176,000 units—a 77% increase from the previous year—driven by increasing consumer adoption, new model launches, and expanding infrastructure.

VinFast’s swift traction stems from strategic advantages, including local assembly at its Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu facility (with an initial capacity of 50,000 units annually, scalable to 150,000), competitive pricing in the ₹16-25 lakh ex-showroom range, and rapid network expansion. The company has already operationalized over 25 dealerships and more than 80 service centers across key cities, with plans for further growth. The VF6 (starting around ₹16.49-17.29 lakh) offers a 59.6 kWh battery with up to 480 km claimed range, while the VF7 (from ₹20.89-21.89 lakh) provides options for single- or dual-motor setups and similar range capabilities.

Analysts highlight that VinFast’s entry into the popular mid-size electric SUV segment—bridging mass-market and premium offerings—has resonated well amid rising demand for practical, feature-rich EVs. Despite a limited two-model lineup initially, the brand’s momentum outpaced several legacy and luxury names in December, signaling strong early acceptance.Looking ahead, VinFast is set to strengthen its portfolio with the upcoming launch of the Limo Green, a seven-seater electric MPV, potentially in early 2026, targeting family and fleet buyers. This move aligns with trends in India’s evolving EV landscape, where space, affordability, and local production play key roles.

VinFast’s performance underscores the intensifying competition in India’s EV space, where new entrants are challenging incumbents through aggressive localization and targeted pricing. As the market continues its upward trajectory, sustained momentum from players like VinFast could further diversify options for consumers and accelerate the shift toward sustainable mobility.

Prospective buyers can explore the VF6 and VF7 at VinFast dealerships or through official channels, with test drives and financing partnerships (including with major banks) already available to support ownership.
