Volvo Cars has thrown down the gauntlet in the battle against EV range anxiety with the announcement of its upcoming EX60 electric mid-size SUV. On January 8, 2026, the Swedish automaker revealed that the new model, set to launch globally later this month, will deliver an impressive driving range of up to 810 km (503 miles) on a single charge under WLTP testing conditions — even in its all-wheel-drive configuration. This positions the EX60 as Volvo’s longest-range electric vehicle to date and one of the top performers in the mid-size EV SUV segment.
Carmakers worldwide have faced challenges accelerating full EV adoption, as many consumers hesitate due to concerns over limited charging infrastructure and the fear of running out of power on long trips — often leading them to choose plug-in hybrids instead. Volvo directly addresses this with the EX60, describing it as a “game changer” designed to eliminate these worries.
The standout 810 km WLTP range (for the AWD variant) significantly surpasses the typical 600 km seen in most mid-size electric SUVs. While some models in China, like Tesla’s long-range Model Y and the Geely-produced Zeekr 7X (from Volvo’s parent company), boast similar or higher figures, the EX60 brings this capability to a global audience with Volvo’s renowned safety and Scandinavian luxury.
Complementing the exceptional range is Volvo’s fastest charging performance yet. The EX60 supports up to 400 kW DC fast charging, adding up to 340 km of range in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions — perfect for a quick coffee stop on road trips. This is enabled by the new SPA3 electric-only platform, featuring an 800-volt architecture, integrated battery structure, in-house developed electric motors, and innovative battery cell design that boosts efficiency while reducing weight.
Volvo CTO Anders Bell emphasized: “The EX60 is designed to be a game changer. With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car.”
The EX60 serves as the fully electric successor to Volvo’s best-selling XC60 combustion-engine model. Full pricing, detailed specifications, and the official world premiere are scheduled for January 21, 2026, with global rollout to follow.
This announcement comes amid Volvo’s push into electrification, despite recent hurdles like software issues, supply-chain constraints, and recalls (including one for certain EX30 models). The EX60 builds on the brand’s growing EV portfolio, including the flagship EX90 and compact EX30, signaling stronger momentum for 2026.
With class-leading range, ultra-rapid charging, and Volvo’s signature focus on safety and sustainability, the EX60 could be the breakthrough model that convinces more mainstream buyers to go fully electric. Stay tuned for the full reveal on January 21 — this could redefine expectations for mid-size electric SUVs!
