In a remarkable achievement that underscores India’s accelerating shift toward sustainable mobility, Tata Motors has surpassed 2.5 lakh cumulative sales of electric vehicles (EVs) across the country. This milestone, announced on December 23, 2025, marks a significant leap forward for the company’s TATA.ev division, which now commands a dominant 66% share of the passenger electric vehicle market in India.
What began modestly five years ago with the launch of the groundbreaking Nexon.ev in 2020 has evolved into a full-fledged ecosystem of electric mobility. Today, more than 250,000 Tata EVs are plying on Indian roads, reaching over 1,000 towns and cities nationwide. This widespread adoption highlights a profound change in consumer behavior — nearly 84% of Tata EV owners now rely on their electric vehicles as their primary mode of transport, with many clocking an average of around 20,000 km per year.
The 250,000+ Tata EVs are now operating in more than 1,000 towns and cities across the country, from bustling metros to smaller urban centers and even rural pockets. This widespread presence highlights the growing accessibility and appeal of electric vehicles beyond just the early adopter phase.
Usage patterns further reveal a profound shift in consumer mindset. Data from Tata Motors shows that nearly 84% of owners rely on their EV as their primary vehicle — not a secondary or weekend car. Many owners drive an average of around 20,000 kilometers per year, demonstrating confidence in the technology for everyday commuting, family outings, and long-distance travel. This marks a significant departure from earlier perceptions of EVs as limited-range urban runabouts.
The scale of this adoption is truly impressive when viewed through the lens of real-world usage. Collectively, Tata’s electric fleet has covered an astounding nearly 12 billion kilometers, traversing every major state and national highway in India. This vast distance not only showcases the reliability and durability of Tata EVs but also reflects the growing trust owners place in these vehicles for diverse driving needs.
Here are some of the popular models contributing to this impressive fleet:
- Nexon.ev — The pioneer and bestseller, becoming the first Indian EV to cross 100,000 individual sales.
- Tiago.ev — Affordable hatchback appeal for city dwellers.
- Punch.ev — Compact SUV versatility.
- Curvv.ev — Modern coupe-SUV design.
- Harrier.ev — Premium performance and range.
These models span various price points and body styles, making electric mobility accessible to a broader audience.
From an environmental perspective, the scale of Tata’s EV adoption is delivering measurable benefits. The nearly 12 billion kilometers driven by these zero-tailpipe-emission vehicles have helped avoid an estimated 1.7 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions — equivalent to planting roughly 80 million trees.
This reduction is a crucial step toward cleaner air in India’s cities and supports the nation’s broader goals of reducing transportation-related greenhouse gases. As EVs replace traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, the cumulative impact grows exponentially, contributing to a more sustainable future.
Tata Motors’ success is backed by a robust ecosystem, including access to over 2 lakh charging points (with 100 MegaCharging Hubs for fast charging along highways), 1,500 dedicated EV service bays, and 5,000 trained technicians. More than 50% local content in these vehicles also reduces import dependence and boosts domestic manufacturing.
The company shows no signs of slowing down. Plans include launching new models like the Sierra.ev and the premium Avinya range by 2026, with a goal of introducing five new EV nameplates by 2030. Tata also aims to expand charging infrastructure to one million points by the same year.
As Shailesh Chandra, MD & CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., aptly put it: “Crossing 250,000 EV sales reflects how electric mobility is fast becoming part of everyday Indian life. Our customers are driving more, travelling farther, and increasingly trusting EVs as their only cars.
“Tata Motors’ journey from pioneer to market leader illustrates the power of innovation, infrastructure, and consumer trust in accelerating India’s transition to electric mobility. With this milestone, the future of sustainable driving in the country looks brighter than ever.
