In a bold step to electrify Telangana’s roads and bolster the state’s green mobility ambitions, the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) kicked off a statewide special drive on Tuesday. The initiative aims to rapidly expand Electric Vehicle (EV) Public Charging Stations (PCS) in key urban and industrial hubs, backed by generous subsidies of up to 100% through the Union government’s flagship “PM E-DRIVE” scheme. The launch underscores Telangana’s commitment to sustainable transportation amid rising EV adoption rates. With India’s EV market projected to surge in the coming years, such infrastructure pushes are crucial to alleviating range anxiety for drivers and encouraging a shift away from fossil fuels.
Hands-On Inspection and Subsidy Announcements
Leading the charge—literally—was Musharraf Faruqui, Chairman and Managing Director of TGSPDCL. On Tuesday, Faruqui personally toured the Telangana Secretariat’s parking areas, scouting prime spots for new charging installations. His on-ground assessment highlights the company’s proactive approach to identifying high-traffic locations where EV infrastructure can make the biggest impact. In a major announcement during the drive, Faruqui revealed that individuals, businesses, and entities setting up EV PCS in major cities and industrial zones stand to benefit from subsidies ranging from 70% to a full 100%. The subsidy quantum will vary based on the site’s category—prioritizing high-demand urban centers and industrial clusters to maximize accessibility.”This is more than just installing chargers; it’s about building a robust ecosystem for EVs that supports our economic growth and environmental goals,” Faruqui stated. “We’re making it easier than ever for entrepreneurs and organizations to contribute to a cleaner Telangana.”
Collaborative Foundations and Streamlined Processes
The special drive builds on a recent high-level meeting involving TGSPDCL, the Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Telangana (REDCO), and leading Charge Point Operators. Stakeholders brainstormed strategies to ensure seamless implementation, from site approvals to grid integration, addressing potential bottlenecks in scaling up charging networks. To democratize participation, TGSPDCL has rolled out a user-friendly dedicated module within the SASA mobile app—a digital tool designed for efficient service delivery in the power sector. Aspiring installers can now submit proposals directly through the app, notifying their local Assistant Engineer. The engineer will promptly visit the proposed site, evaluate feasibility, and incorporate the details into the approval pipeline. This tech-driven approach minimizes paperwork and accelerates timelines, allowing applicants to get up and running faster. Early adopters in cities like Hyderabad, Warangal, and industrial belts such as Patancheru are already expressing interest, with the company aiming to operationalize dozens of new stations by year-end.
Broader Implications for Telangana’s EV Ecosystem
The PM E-DRIVE scheme, formally known as Pradhan Mantri E-Drive, allocates substantial central funding to states for EV promotion, including charging infrastructure, battery swapping, and public awareness campaigns. Telangana’s alignment with this national program positions it as a frontrunner in southern India, potentially attracting investments from automakers like Tata Motors and Mahindra, who are ramping up local EV production.
Experts hail the initiative as a game-changer. “Subsidies at this level remove financial barriers for small operators, fostering widespread deployment,” said Dr. Priya Reddy, an urban mobility analyst at IIT Hyderabad. “Coupled with TGSPDCL’s grid reliability, this could see EV penetration in Telangana double within two years.”
As the drive gains momentum, TGSPDCL urges residents and businesses to explore opportunities via the SASA app or their nearest substation. With subsidies this attractive, the hum of electric chargers may soon become as commonplace as honking horns in the state’s bustling streets—paving the way for a quieter, greener future.
