In the fiercely competitive Indian SUV market, Honda Cars India has been playing catch-up. The Honda Elevate, launched in 2023 as the brand’s sole SUV offering, arrived fashionably late to the segment dominated by the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. Despite the delayed entry, the Elevate injected much-needed momentum into Honda’s sales figures, helping the Japanese automaker claw back some market share. However, with rivals accelerating toward electrification, Honda is not resting on its laurels. The company is gearing up for a trio of exciting launches: the hybrid-powered Elevate, the premium ZR-V Hybrid, and its first-ever fully electric SUV tailored for India. These models signal Honda’s bold pivot toward sustainable mobility, with launches slated between late 2025 and 2027.
Elevate Hybrid: A Greener Twist on a Familiar Favorite
Honda’s strategy begins at home with the Elevate Hybrid, a powertrain upgrade designed to blend efficiency with the SUV’s proven appeal. Testing for this variant has already kicked off, with a camouflaged test mule recently spotted on the roads of Brazil. The exterior retains the familiar silhouette of the current India-spec Elevate, though insiders hint at minor cosmetic tweaks—like refreshed grille patterns or LED accents—to inject a contemporary vibe without overhauling the design.Under the hood, the real excitement lies in Honda’s next-generation hybrid system, which emphasizes simplicity and sustainability. This setup incorporates lighter, more efficient components, including a downsized yet energy-dense electric motor, a compact lithium-ion battery pack, and an optimized e-CVT transmission. These enhancements aim to reduce manufacturing costs while boosting reliability and ease of maintenance—key factors for Indian buyers who prioritize long-term ownership. The hybrid powertrain is expected to pair the Elevate’s existing 1.5-litre petrol engine with electric assistance, delivering improved fuel efficiency (potentially north of 25 kmpl) and seamless urban drivability.
Honda has confirmed the Elevate Hybrid’s India debut in the second half of 2026, likely timed for the festive season to capitalize on seasonal demand. Priced around Rs 2-2.5 lakh premium over the standard Elevate (which starts at Rs 11 lakh), it positions itself as a direct rival to the Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrids. This move not only addresses India’s push for cleaner vehicles but also helps Honda meet stringent CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) norms.
ZR-V Hybrid: Premium Size and Sophisticated Power
Stepping up the ladder is the Honda ZR-V Hybrid, a midsize SUV that promises to fill the gap between the Elevate and Honda’s upcoming premium offerings. Globally, the ZR-V has carved a niche as a stylish, tech-laden alternative to compact crossovers, and its Indian avatar could disrupt the segment with its generous proportions.Measuring 4,568 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,611 mm in height, the ZR-V dwarfs the Hyundai Creta (4,330 mm long) in every dimension. Its 2,655 mm wheelbase ensures cavernous rear-seat space and a 380-litre boot, while the international model’s 126 mm ground clearance is likely to be raised for India’s pothole-ridden roads. The cabin, previewed in global trims, boasts a dual-screen setup (10.2-inch digital cluster and 9-inch infotainment), wireless charging, and Honda Sensing ADAS suite, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.
Power comes from Honda’s e:HEV system: a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine paired with two electric motors for a combined 181 hp and 315 Nm of torque. This self-charging hybrid delivers around 20 kmpl in real-world conditions, with seamless transitions between electric, hybrid, and engine modes. Unlike the Elevate Hybrid, the ZR-V is expected to arrive as a fully imported CBU (completely built-up) unit initially, which could inflate its price tag to Rs 25-35 lakh.
Honda showcased the ZR-V Hybrid to dealers in early 2025, fueling speculation of an imminent launch by late 2025 or early 2026. If greenlit, it would mark Honda’s entry into the premium hybrid SUV fray, challenging the likes of the Toyota Innova Hycross and upcoming rivals from MG and BYD.
Sub-4-Metre Electric SUV: Honda’s EV Bet on Compact Urban Warriors
Honda’s electrification ambitions culminate with its maiden fully electric SUV for India—a sub-4-metre crossover optimized for city commutes and tax incentives. Contrary to earlier rumors of an Elevate EV, Honda has clarified that this model will be a ground-up design, distinct from its ICE and hybrid siblings.
In a recent interview, Kunal Behl, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Honda Cars India, revealed that the EV will hit showrooms between April 2026 and March 2027 (FY27). “This will be our first India-focused electric car,” Behl emphasized, underscoring Honda’s commitment to local relevance. Expect a front-wheel-drive layout with a single electric motor (likely 100-150 hp), a 30-40 kWh battery for 300-350 km range, and fast-charging capabilities. The sub-4m footprint (under 3,999 mm) ensures it qualifies for lower GST and avoids the 7% road tax premium on longer vehicles, making it an attractive proposition for first-time EV buyers.
Priced competitively around Rs 15-20 lakh, the SUV will integrate Honda’s e:Architecture platform, featuring V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality and over-the-air updates. It aligns with Honda’s broader goal of offering five SUVs by 2030, blending hybrids and EVs to capture diverse buyer segments.
A Charged Path Ahead for Honda in India
With the Elevate Hybrid revitalizing its bestseller, the ZR-V adding premium flair, and the sub-4m EV heralding a zero-emission era, Honda is scripting a compelling narrative for 2026 and beyond. These launches reflect a pragmatic blend of global tech and local insights, addressing India’s dual challenges of fuel costs and environmental regulations. As the market shifts toward electrified powertrains—projected to account for 30% of sales by 2030—Honda’s timely investments could reignite its growth story. For now, Elevate owners can look forward to greener horizons, while prospective buyers gear up for a Honda SUV lineup that’s finally keeping pace with the times. Stay tuned for official reveals as testing intensifies.
