Tata Motors dominates the Indian electric passenger vehicle market with a healthy 40% share and is working towards launching a highly important new model to maintain and increase its lead in the expanding family SUV market. After much anticipation, Tata Motors is set to launch the highly awaited Tata Safari EV in January 2027. The new SUV will be based on the advanced Acti.ev+ platform used by the popular Harrier EV and will come in two variants, 6 and 7 seater. It will be Tata’s first true 3-row SUV and will be a great option for large Indian families.

The platform offers a flat floor, more efficient packaging and allows different battery and powertrain options to be introduced without compromising development. The Safari EV is expected to have a 65 kWh battery and 75 kWh battery. There are strong hints that the larger 80 kWh battery will be reserved for the top variant. This will give the SUV a great range of around/over 600km. The rear-wheel-drive variant will offer great efficiency, whereas the twin motor AWD version will offer better performance, grip and more power.

The exterior design will follow a similar design to the current Safari but will be updated to suit an electric vehicle. It will have a sealed front bumper, new bumpers, aerodynamic alloys and subtle electric badges. This will give it a strong presence on the road but will be more efficient. The interior will be dramatically improved. It will have a triple screen setup with a big centre touchscreen, digital dashboard and a passenger display. Ventilated seats will be included, as well as a panoramic roof, luxury seats, multiple drive modes and smart car tech. The 3-row layout will offer great practicality with enough room and features for those in the second and third rows.

Tata Motors are known for their strong safety features and the Safari EV is expected to continue this trend. The SUV will have a strong frame made from high quality materials to help give it great scores in crash tests. It will be fitted with a full Level 2 ADAS system, multiple airbags, 540 degree camera, stability control and strong battery protection.

The Tata Safari EV will be competing against the Mahindra XEV 9S and the new MG Hector Tomahawk EV. It is expected to have a starting price of around Rs 20 lakh and will reach up to around Rs 32 lakh for the fully loaded variants. It will offer great space, range, tech and will use the strong Tata brand to make it one of the most important launches of 2027.
