JSW Motors is launching a well thought-out multi-pronged entry into India’s passenger vehicle market, with three distinct SUVs that will utilise plug-in hybrid, petrol-hybrid and purely electric powertrains. The approach is an indication that the company is looking to move away from a mono-technology approach and address the varied needs, driving patterns and charging realities across the country. The newly formed SUV brand is set to unveil its first model on December 4 and will announce pricing at the same time.
The opening product will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain, enabling it to cater as a practical bridge between conventional petrol vehicles and purely electric cars. Expected to be called the JSW Combat, the SUV will utilise a boxy design that is already sold in several international markets. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain will feature a petrol engine combined with electric motors and a rechargeable battery, giving buyers the flexibility of electric driving for day-to-day use while providing the reassurance of petrol range for longer journeys.
The second model in the line-up is expected to be based on the Chery iCar V23. This vehicle features a retro-inspired styling, boxy silhouette and a feature-rich cabin that is set to provide both character and modern convenience. Unlike the Combat, the iCar V23-based SUV is expected to debut primarily as a battery electric vehicle, although a plug-in hybrid version is also understood to be under consideration. The combination of distinctive design and electric propulsion has the potential to appeal to buyers looking for something visually different from mainstream mid-size SUVs.
Completing the initial trio is a model based on the Jaecoo J5. It is expected to launch first with a petrol-hybrid powertrain before a purely electric version follows later. The J5’s vertically-oriented touchscreen infotainment system and Sony surround sound setup is an indication that it will provide a premium cabin experience. Measuring 4,380 mm in length with a 2,620 mm wheelbase, the SUV is set to compete directly with popular mid-size models such as the Hyundai Creta, Toyota Grand Vitara, Renault Duster, Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV700. The petrol-hybrid option is particularly relevant for Indian customers who want the efficiency benefits of electrification without fully committing to a purely electric vehicle and the associated charging infrastructure.
Taken together, the three models provide JSW Motors with a flexible and timely entry strategy. By addressing plug-in hybrid, petrol-hybrid and purely electric options from the outset, the company is acknowledging that Indian buyers are at different stages of readiness for electrified mobility. Some seek maximum electric range with the safety net of a petrol engine, others prefer the simplicity of a self-charging hybrid, while a growing segment is ready for a purely electric SUV. The December 4 unveil of the first model will mark the formal start of this ambitious chapter, and the arrival of the remaining two SUVs will further expand the brand’s reach across one of the world’s most competitive passenger vehicle markets.
