MG is all set to undertake a major model refresh in India, as it eyes to replace its current ZS and Astor line-up with two new nameplates, namely the S5 EV and the ZS HEV. The company is eyeing to modernise its SUV portfolio by introducing a more contemporary pure- electric model, along with a practical hybrid option, better aligned with the changing preferences of Indian customers for electrified mobility.
The MG S5 is slated to replace the ZS EV in India, and will be available in the form of a mid-size SUV. As compared to its predecessor, the S5 EV boasts a more futuristic design language, with sharper lines, and a sportier silhouette that better blends in with the on-the-go Indian buyer. The S5 features a rounded, crossover-inspired design that makes it stand out in the busy streets of India. Sharp LED headlamps, large dual-tone alloy wheels with aero inserts for improved efficiency, and connected LED tail-lamps, add to its contemporary aesthetic that is sure to grab attention. With its practicality and striking design, the S5 is poised to be a popular choice among Indian families that are looking to upgrade to a modern, and electric family SUV.
Apart from the pure-electric S5, MG is also set to introduce the ZS HEV, a hybrid SUV that will utilise a 1.5-litre petrol engine, coupled with a small battery and an electric motor to form a hybrid powertrain. The ZS HEV is expected to produce 196 PS of power and 465 Nm of torque, and will offer a compelling blend of performance and fuel efficiency. In the UK, where the ZS HEV is already available, it is claimed to return a fuel efficiency figure of 20 to 23.5 kmpl, and is likely to appeal to Indian buyers that are looking for a hybrid powertrain option, without compromising on performance.
With MG set to replace some of its current SUVs in India with the S5 EV and the ZS HEV, it is evident that the company is eyeing to pivot towards more futuristic, and electrified mobility propositions. While the S5 EV is expected to allure customers that are looking for a smart, and striking electric SUV, the ZS HEV will cater to buyers that are interested in a hybrid powertrain solution, with the familiar familiarity of a petrol engine under the bonnet. In the long run, the introduction of the S5 EV and the ZS HEV, as replacements for the current ZS and Astor line-up in India, will benefit MG by helping it garner greater appeal in the local electrified vehicle market.
