Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast is continuing to make preparations to enter the electric two-wheeler market in India, filing another patent for an electric scooter. The latest patent filing highlights the growing list of two-wheelers patented by the brand in the country in 2026 and suggests that VinFast could be looking to bring on different two-wheeler products for India.
Since June 2026, VinFast has patented three electric scooters and a motorcycle in India. The latest patent filing gives an insight into yet another electric scooter for the Indian road conditions. It remains to be seen whether the patented design will actually make it to production and on to Indian showrooms.
The newly patented electric scooter design differs from the rest of the two-wheelers previously patented by VinFast in India and is a glimpse into what the Vietnamese EV maker’s product portfolio could potentially comprise as it searches for ways to tap into the lucrative two-wheeler market.
The electric scooter could be a India-exclusive product, although VinFast has yet to comment on the potential product positioning that it has in mind. If the model develops for India, it could focus on the local riding conditions, daily commuting requirements and the rising demand for electric scooters in the Indian roadways.
One of the most notable reveals emerging from the patent filing is the potential hub-mounted electric motor. Unlike scooters that mount an electric motor at the center of the vehicle and use a gear system to transfer power to the rear wheel, a hub-mounted motor is a self-contained unit with the motor directly mounted on to the wheel. Such a system can reduce the complexity of the drivetrain, although the actual motor design of the newly patented scooter has yet to be divulged.
The patent filing also suggests that the electric scooter could potentially be equipped with 14-inch wheels. Such a size can provide several potential advantages in terms of stability and the capability to negotiate rough road surfaces depending on the suspension travel, tire profile and the overall mechanical set-up of the vehicle. The attributes can prove useful in the Indian road conditions, where electric scooters need to be able to deal with a variety of surfaces from smooth city roads to pitted or uneven surfaces in suburbs and rural areas.
VinFast’s increasing focus on India is highlighted by its recent patent filings, which come ahead of the Vietnamese EV maker’s projected market entry in the country. VinFast has made a strong push to establish itself in the Indian EV market for passenger vehicles and is now looking to diversify into the burgeoning electric two-wheeler market.
VinFast has recently signed letters of intent (LOIs) with as many as 50 dealers to establish a sales and service network across the country. It remains crucial for the Vietnamese EV maker to develop an extensive dealer network to support the service and ownership experience of its electric two-wheelers, should it decide to bring the vehicles to India. Customers are now considering service accessibility, spare-parts availability and ownership support when purchasing electric two-wheelers.
VinFast’s potential two-wheeler portfolio can help satisfy a range of customer requirements in India, from commuters to performance enthusiasts. Patenting multiple scooters and one motorcycle suggests that the company has a range of potential vehicles in the pipeline instead of a single model.
It is still unclear what range specifications, launch timelines or pricing the company has in store for any two-wheeler product that eventually launches in India. Details such as battery pack capacity, riding range, charging requirements, power output of the motor and connected features still remain under wraps for the newly patented scooter.
India’s electric two-wheeler market has gained the attention of both local and foreign EV manufacturers, with established brands vying to capture the segment with competitive pricing, range, performance and technology. VinFast could bring the competition space in India even closer, adding yet another international player to the fray and driving the space further.
If the latest patented electric scooter is developed specifically for the Indian road conditions, it could perhaps provide an insight into the approach that the Vietnamese EV maker is looking at for the country. The potential hub-mounted electric motor can point towards a practical urban-focused concept for the Indian conditions, although its positioning will ultimately depend on the production model’s specifications and features.
VinFast has not officially announced a launch date, or confirmed whether the potentially India-exclusive electric scooter design will actually make it to showrooms. As more details about VinFast’s electric two-wheeler entry in India emerge, its increasing readiness to enter the competitive electric mobility space of the country will become further evident.
