Mahindra has reported an impressive rise in India’s electric vehicle market, with a 96% increase in EV registrations in September 2026 compared to the same period last year. As of September, Mahindra has registered 7,779 electric vehicles, securing the second position in India’s electric passenger vehicle market with a 21.6% market share.
Despite the impressive rise in EV registrations, a closer look at Mahindra’s sales figures suggests that the XEV 9S electric SUV is helping carry the lion’s share of the automaker’s electric vehicle sales.
XEV 9S recorded 4,439 units in September, representing approximately 57% of Mahindra’s overall EV volume. It is worth noting that the tremendous reception for the electric SUV has propelled it to become a significant force in Mahindra’s EV sales.
On the contrary, Mahindra’s other electric SUVs, including the XEV 9E and BE 6, have underperformed in comparison to the rising sales of the XEV 9S. In September, XEV 9E recorded 1,954 units, representing a 21% YoY decrease. Meanwhile, BE 6 registered 1,045 units, down 20% year-over-year.
Although Mahindra’s overall EV volume rose close to double in September 2026, the impressive rise seems to be driven primarily by the XEV 9S as the electric SUV recorded more than half of Mahindra’s overall EV volume. The underwhelming performance of other electric SUVs suggests that Mahindra is currently heavily relying on the XEV 9S to drive its overall EV volume.
The situation is not entirely surprising, considering that Mahindra aims to be among India’s leading electric SUV makers. Mahindra’s INGLO-based electric vehicles have enabled the company to offer an entirely new class of long-range EVs with superior luxury, technology, performance, and comfort. As a result, the automaker generated significant hype around the XEV 9S, and the electric SUV appears to be delivering on the promises.
It remains to be seen whether Mahindra will be able to leverage the phenomenal success of the XEV 9S to propel the sales of its other electric vehicles. Although the XEV 9E and BE 6 are essential SUVs for Mahindra, their overall reception, both in terms of sales and consumer feedback, has been comparatively muted. Therefore, the upcoming electric SUVs will be critical in determining whether Mahindra can maintain the impressive growth in EV sales.
Overall, Mahindra recorded an impressive rise in EV sales in September 2026, with a 96% YoY increase and a 21.6% market share in India’s electric passenger vehicle market. Still, the automaker’s impressive rise appears to be driven primarily by the stellar performance of the XEV 9S electric SUV. For Mahindra, the critical question now is whether it can rely on the phenomenal success of the XEV 9S while also leveraging its success to propel the sales of other electric SUVs, including the XEV 9E, BE 6, and others. If successful, Mahindra’s impressive rise in EV sales growth will be spectacular.
