India’s electric passenger vehicle market witnessed a distinct change at the helm in August 2026 as the Mahindra XEV 9S garnered the best-seller status with 3,743 units. The three-row electric SUV was preferred by buyers for its spaciousness and family-centric proposition in the mid-size segment. Right behind it, the Tata Punch EV retained the second position with 3,468 units. The compact electric crossover maintained its hold over the first-time EV buyers and the urban commuters who were looking for something accessible but practical.

The MG Windsor, which had been on a roll earlier this year, dropped to the third spot with the same 3,468 units as the Punch EV. While the Windsor maintained a decent level of sales, it failed to keep up with the competition in the monthly race. Mahindra’s success with the XEV 9S is down to its three-row seating, competitive pricing and the growing confidence in the brand’s Born Electric portfolio. Buyers were looking for something more practical and versatile, and the XEV 9S delivered on that front vis-a-vis its more compact competitors.

The XEV 9S performance also shows that new entrants in the electric SUV space could quickly climb the charts if they addressed the family-centric segment’s specific needs. Tata Motors remained the EV market leader, with its volume sales being driven by the Punch EV. The second-place finish by the Punch EV underlines the demand for the affordable electric vehicles that could offer value and versatility to the everyday commuter.

The fact that the Punch EV registered the same sales as the Windsor in August speaks of a healthy competition in the mid-volume segment. For MG, the Windsor’s third-place finish marks a dip in its fortunes, with the Windsor retaining its appeal but unable to hold its ground against the rising competition. The overall EV registrations remained robust on a year-on-year basis but the sequential pressures and model-specific preferences were reshaping the order at the top.

With the festive season set to ramp up the competition, Mahindra will be looking to leverage the XEV 9S’s success, Tata aims to keep the Punch EV’s steady climb going and MG will be looking to claw back higher grounds with the Windsor. August 2026 made it clear that in the India’s electric vehicle market, leadership was not a given – and product strengths like space, practicality and value were dictating the monthly winners.
