Hyundai Motor India is set to launch its most affordable electric car in the domestic market before the end of 2026. The new model is scheduled to hit the roads in the last weeks of the year, most probably in November or December. This allows the Korean automaker to enter the busy year-end buying season in good time and gain a fresh opportunity to capture volume in a market segment that has so far been dominated by local players.
The vehicle is set to compete directly with the established rivals such the Tata Nexon EV and the Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, plus other compact electric cars that currently define the accessible end of India’s EV landscape. Hyundai’s existing electric range has delivered only limited sales volumes and a low single-digit share of the overall electric passenger-vehicle market. Company officials see the forthcoming model as a critical tool for lifting that penetration figure substantially and broadening the brand’s appeal beyond premium and mid-range buyers.
Battery supply arrangements proved more complicated than initially planned. Hyundai had intended to source cells from an Indian manufacturer, but delays in that partnership threatened the launch schedule. To keep the project on track, the company turned instead to Chinese battery specialist SVOLT. The switch was made expressly to prevent further postponement and to ensure the car reaches customers within the current calendar year.
Underpinning the new model is the Inster EV platform, already on sale in several international markets. Globally the platform is offered with two battery packs: a 42 kWh unit claimed to deliver around 300 km of range and a larger 49 kWh pack rated at approximately 355 km. Indian specifications are still being finalised and may differ, with the possibility of optimised range figures better suited to local driving patterns, climate and charging infrastructure. The car will also come equipped with Level 2 advanced driver-assistance systems, bringing a level of active safety technology that is increasingly expected even in more affordable electric vehicles.
Importantly, Hyundai has emphasised that the model has been conceived and engineered from the outset as a pure electric vehicle for Indian conditions rather than an internal-combustion design later adapted for battery power. This purpose-built approach is intended to deliver better packaging efficiency, refined driving dynamics and a more competitive ownership experience in a market where range anxiety, charging convenience and total cost of ownership remain decisive factors for many customers.
Taken together, the year-end launch represents Hyundai’s clearest signal yet that it intends to compete aggressively in the volume segment of India’s electric-car market. If the project stays on schedule, the new affordable EV could arrive just in time to capitalise on growing consumer interest and the continuing policy push toward cleaner mobility, potentially reshaping the competitive balance among entry-level battery-electric offerings in the months ahead.
