A fully production-ready prototype of the Nissan Terrano PHEV has been spotted in China, pointing toward a debut of the boxy, plug-in hybrid SUV that would revive a reborn nameplate from the Renault Duster. Initially sold as the Nissan Terrano, the first generation model was powered by a range of petrol and diesel engines, and was largely based on the Renault Duster. However, the new model is a completely different animal that has been previewed at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show ahead of its production start in China. The Terrano PHEV is set to launch in China in early 2027, and could then be exported to the Middle East, ASEAN and possibly Latin America to satisfy the demand for utilitarian, rough terrain SUVs that are sure to be in demand among the region’s consumers. Designed as an entry-level model for these markets, the Terrano PHEV features a boxy design that is typical of utilitarian crossovers, but also incorporates plug-in hybrid tech to make it more eco-friendly and efficient.
The production-ready prototype of the Terrano PHEV has already been captured on camera several times in China. Compared to the concept that was seen at the Beijing Auto Show, the production model features a slightly modified headlamp housing, tweaked front fascia treatment and new alloy wheels design. In essence, the new production model looks almost identical to the concept, apart from minor details that were necessary to prepare it for production. Overall, the production-ready Terrano PHEV looks very similar to other boxy, full-size SUVs, but manages to distinguish itself with the squared-off front end design that makes it appear larger and more capable than your average crossover.
In many ways, the Terrano represents a quantum leap forward over its predecessors, offering an extensive range of powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid option that is likely to appeal to environmentally conscious buyers who want to reduce their carbon footprint while still enjoying the comforts of a family-friendly, full-size SUV. In its attempt to balance emissions reduction, fuel efficiency and utility, the Terrano PHEV has been designed with an extremely versatile powertrain architecture that will see the revived model sold in China and potentially other regions around the world. With the production ready prototype already being tested in China, it is safe to assume that the Terrano PHEV will soon be arriving in China in early 2027, following the local launch that is set to take place in the first quarter of the year.
