Maruti Suzuki is developing an affordable battery electric vehicle expected to be priced below ₹10 lakh ex-showroom, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. The new BEV will sit below the e Vitara in the manufacturer’s growing electric portfolio and is scheduled for introduction over the next two years as Maruti aims to push electric mobility deeper into India’s mass market. Built on a new dedicated platform at the company’s Hansalpur facility in Gujarat, the model is intended for both domestic sales and exports, leveraging India’s role as a production hub for Suzuki’s global EV programme.
High levels of localisation combined with a smaller battery pack are expected to help keep the price in the ₹8.5 lakh to ₹10.5 lakh range. Unlike premium electric SUVs that emphasise long claimed ranges, this entry-level electric car will prioritise affordability and everyday practicality for first-time EV buyers. Technical specifications remain under wraps, but the focus on cost efficiency signals Maruti’s intention to compete directly in the most price-sensitive segment of the market.
The positioning places the upcoming Maruti EV in head-to-head competition with established rivals such as the Tata Tiago.ev and Punch EV, both of which currently offer accessible entry points into electric ownership. It will also face MG Motor India’s Comet EV and Hyundai’s planned made-for-India A-segment electric model expected around 2027. By targeting this volume-oriented space, Maruti Suzuki seeks to replicate the success it has long enjoyed in the conventional small-car market, where its extensive dealership network, strong brand trust and service infrastructure give it a significant advantage.
The move follows the recent market entry of the e Vitara, Maruti’s first electric SUV, which has already helped the company climb into the ranks of India’s top EV sellers despite a relatively late start. Expanding downward with a more affordable pure-electric model allows the carmaker to address a broader customer base while spreading the costs of its dedicated BEV architecture across multiple products. As India’s EV ecosystem continues to mature with improved charging infrastructure and rising buyer confidence, Maruti’s planned sub-₹10 lakh electric car could play a pivotal role in accelerating mass adoption and reshaping the competitive landscape in the country’s most accessible electric vehicle segment.
